About Us
The Grand Traverse County Building Department is responsible for protecting the health, safety, and welfare of the people who visit and live in Grand Traverse County by regulating the construction of our built environment to ensure compliance with construction codes, ordinances, and related rules and regulations.

Permit Application Process
We strongly encourage you to conduct business with us online at Grand Traverse County's electronic permit and inspection center (EPIC GT)!
- Once you are registered in EPIC GT, you will be able to apply for new permits and request inspections with our office.
- Residents can access the EPIC GT portal without an account to view limited information regarding development activity
Estimated wait for Plan Review: Minimum of 2 weeks, commercial plan review may take longer.
Trade Plan Review Requirements:
- Trade plan review applications are available under the "Applications & Forms" section of our website and in our office. They need to be filled out completely to be turned in with the plans.
- We require 2 full-size sets of hard plans that are sealed for each trade you are applying for.
- The trade plan review fee is $75/Trade.
- Please note that trade plan reviews are done separately from the building plan review. You can contact our office for any further questions.

Daily Inspections
All disconnect - reconnect and sewer/water inspections must have prior approval with office staff. For disconnect/reconnects, please make sure this is coordinated with the power company as well. Voice mail messages or online requests are not accepted.
***Please Note: When calling/emailing/leaving voicemails for inspection requests, make sure to include the site address, permit number, type of inspection, date requesting, site contact name/phone number. Thank you!***

We are using the 2021 Michigan Building Code, 2021 Rehabilitation Code for Existing Buildings, 2021 Michigan Energy Code, 2021 Michigan Residential Code, 2023 Michigan Electrical Code, 2021 Michigan Mechanical Code, and 2021 Michigan Plumbing Code.

*The State of Michigan is currently reviewing updates for the Residential Code and Residential Energy Code. The 2015 Michigan Residential Code and the 2015 Residential Energy Code will remain in effect until further notice. Updated information will be provided when available.*
The State of Michigan (LARA) has revised the rules for the seal of Architects and Engineers to now include the licensee’s full name and license number.
