Our October theme is “A Grand Place to Thrive.” Grand Traverse is truly a grand place to thrive—especially for seniors—thanks to its welcoming community and the incredible offerings through the Senior Center Network and Commission on Aging. From fitness classes and winter wellness to educational programs and helpful support services, there’s always something to enjoy. Seniors here can stay active, connected and cared for year-round, making Grand Traverse a wonderful place to call home.
Senior Winter Smart Commute
Now is the perfect time to give the BATA bus a try before winter weather sets in! Seniors age 60+, Veterans, and Active Military receive a 50% discount, making it an affordable and reliable way to get around. If it’s your first time and you’d like a little extra support, BATA offers a “BATA Buddy” program—friendly volunteers who will ride along with you to help you learn the routes. With BATA Link, you’ll enjoy convenient door-to-door service, while the Bayline makes it easy to hop on and off at bus stops. Best of all, BATA takes the stress out of parking and traffic, getting you to the Senior Center Network safely and comfortably.

You can also stay informed and prepared with our Safety Series, covering important topics like first aid, CPR, AED use, carbon monoxide awareness and emergency services. Plus, you’ll have access to top-quality instruction—teachers from Yen Yoga bring their expertise right to the Senior Center Network, offering Pilates, yoga and dance classes. It’s a wonderful way to stay active, learn new skills, and connect with friends in a welcoming community.

Services Offered by the Commission on Aging
The Commission on Aging (COA) offers a wide range of services to support seniors and their families, many of which are available at little to no cost thanks to a sliding fee scale—75% of clients receive services for free. These include foot care (both in-clinic and in-home for those who are homebound), personal care provided by state-certified nurse aides, bi-weekly light housecleaning and in-home nurse visits to help with overall health and wellness. Outdoor services such as mowing, snow removal and window washing help keep homes safe and manageable, while personal emergency response units provide peace of mind. The COA also offers respite care for caregivers, assistance with emergency expenses like heating bills, and transportation support through coupons and BATA passes. We encourage sons and daughters of seniors—especially those balancing caregiving with work—to check out our services to help their loved ones thrive.
