Lieutenant Joshua Kniss began his career with the Grand Traverse County Sheriff’s Office in September of 2005, was promoted to the rank of Sergeant in January of 2018 and to the rank of Lieutenant in December of 2024.
Josh has been Defensive Tactics Instructor within the Corrections Division, holding instructor certifications in PPCT Defensive tactics, Spontaneous Knife Defense, Ground Avoidance/Ground Escape and Taser. He has also been a Firearms Instructor and Armorer within the Corrections Division.
Prior to working for the Sheriff’s Office, Josh served in the United States Marine Corps Reserves from 2003-2009 with a deployment to Fallujah, Iraq in 2006. He worked full time in design and engineering in the construction industry.
