Gun Registration Information and Form


As of Feb. 13, 2024, if you do not possess a valid Concealed Pistol License (CPL), MCOLES, or Federal Firearms License (FFL), you must apply for a License to Purchase, (also called LTP or “Purchase Permit”), at any Michigan Police Department or Sheriff’s Office before purchasing or transferring a firearm.

SELLER is responsible to complete and submit the Firearm Sales Record (RI-060) to their local Police Dept. or Sheriff's Office within 10 days.
Out-of-State Carry Permit Exception STILL APPLIES
BUYER must first obtain LTP (RI-010a) and present to Seller.
SELLER is responsible to complete and submit the License to Purchase (RI-010a) to the Licensing Authority within 10 days

What is required to apply for a Purchase Permit?

  • A background check will be completed to determine firearm eligibility.
  • You must be 18 years of age or older to apply.
  • You must have a valid Michigan Driver’s License or Michigan State ID that reflects your
    current address.
  • If you were not born in the United States, you will need to provide additional citizenship documentation such as a valid US passport, Certificate of Citizenship, Certificate of Naturalization, or Permanent Resident Card (Green Card).

How do I apply for a Concealed Pistol License (CPL)?

Permit applications for a Concealed Pistol License (CPL) must be obtained through the Grand Traverse County Clerk. The Grand Traverse Sheriff's Department does not accept CPL applications.
