Gun Registration Information and Form

As of Feb. 13, 2024, if you do not possess a valid Concealed Pistol License (CPL), MCOLES, or Federal Firearms License (FFL), you must apply for a License to Purchase, (also called LTP or “Purchase Permit”), at any Michigan Police Department or Sheriff’s Office before purchasing or transferring a firearm.

What is required to apply for a Purchase Permit?

A background check will be completed to determine firearm eligibility.
You must be 18 years of age or older to apply.
You must have a valid Michigan Driver’s License or Michigan State ID that reflects your
current address.
If you were not born in the United States, you will need to provide additional citizenship documentation such as a valid US passport, Certificate of Citizenship, Certificate of Naturalization, or Permanent Resident Card (Green Card).

How do I apply for a Concealed Pistol License (CPL)?

Permit applications for a Concealed Pistol License (CPL) must be obtained through the Grand Traverse County Clerk. The Grand Traverse Sheriff's Department does not accept CPL applications.
