Responsibilities
The primary responsibility of the Field Services Division is to provide the highest quality of public services and safety to the citizens and visitors of Grand Traverse County.

Grand Traverse County is situated in Northwest Lower Michigan. Covering 466 square miles, it consists of over 149 inland lakes, Lake Michigan shoreline, miles of state forests, farmland (cherry capital of the world), and is a regional retail center and tourist destination. These factors can place the areas total population to well over 100,000 and can pose unique challenges for law enforcement.

Services

With 53 officers, including 1 Captain, 2 Lieutenants, 7 Sergeants, and 43 deputies, we provide primary law enforcement services to the community, responding to over 45,000 calls for service annually with a $3 million budget.

Services provided by officers include proactive patrol, community policing and criminal investigation. Our department is supplemented by specialized teams in advanced traffic crash reconstruction, dive rescue and recovery, emergency response (ERT), traffic enforcement and K-9.

Our ability to provide high level services require potential officers to have a minimum of two years of college and must be MCOLES certifiable at time of employment. Applicants are required to pass a physical test, a written test, an oral interview and a psychological test.

Training

Qualified officers hired enter a 3-month intense field-training program with a Field Training Officer. Officers who complete this phase are on probation for an additional 9 months.
