What Is Resource Recovery?

Resource recovery is the process of capturing specific waste materials for reprocessing into new forms or energy. Recovered materials can be used as raw materials in the making of new products. Resource recovery efforts help our environment and our economy by:
  • Creating and maintaining jobs in the recycling, reuse and manufacturing industries in the U.S.
  • Reducing the amount of waste sent to landfills
  • Conserving natural resources
  • Reducing pollution by reducing the amount of raw materials needed
  • Saving energy
  • Reducing greenhouse gas emissions that contribute to global climate change

Mission Statement

The mission of the Grand Traverse County Resource Recovery Department (RecycleSmart) is to protect the public health and environment of our community by efficiently managing waste materials with a focus on resource conservation.
