Animal Control
The Grand Traverse County Health Department's (GTCHD) Animal Control Division offers our community services such as dog adoptions, reuniting dogs with their owners, animal welfare checks, kennel inspections, picking up stray dogs, and dog licensing. Our officers also collaborate with area rescues, fosters, and the Cherryland Humane Society to find dogs their forever homes.
Grand Traverse County Animal Control (GTCAC) Ordinance.
Dog Adoptions:
If you want to add a new furry family member, visit our GTCAC Facebook page or the Cherryland Humane Society website for our available dogs. Our animal control officers are here to answer any questions, set up meet-n-greets, and help you find the perfect match by calling 231-995-6080.
Click the link for our Dog Adoption Application form and email the completed form to jbemiss@gtcountymi.gov.
Lost and Found Dogs:
If you're looking for a lost dog, reporting a found dog, or turning in a stray dog, please call us at 231-995-6080. Michigan law requires that found dogs must be reported within 48 hours. You can also search the License Database for the owner's information if you find a lost dog.
Dog License:
It's important to note that all dogs who are four months and older are required by law to be licensed in the county where they reside. This license should be worn by the dog at all times. It serves as proof that the dog is vaccinated against rabies, and it also helps identify the owner of the dog. If your pet gets lost, a license can serve as a means to get them back to you.
To obtain a dog license, contact our Grand Traverse County Treasurer's Office at 231-995-6070 or visit their website online.
Kennel License Fees:
- On-site kennel inspections are required each year before purchasing a kennel license.
- Inspections start in the second week of April.
- Kennel owners will be given a renewal reminder by mail each year.
- All kennel license renewals must be purchased before the June 1st deadline to avoid any late fees.
Canine Welfare Check:
- If you know or see a situation where you believe a dog's welfare may be in jeopardy, or for any routine matters, please contact us at 231-995-6080.
- For other non-emergency situations involving animal neglect or abuse, contact central dispatch at 231-922-4550.
- For emergencies, including endangerment or life-threatening situations, call 9-1-1.
Animal Bites:
If you or someone you know has been bitten or scratched by an animal, it's important to seek medical attention. Medical facilities and veterinarian offices are required to report these exposures to local health departments regardless of whether the animal involved is vaccinated or not. You can also report yourself by calling 231-995-6125. If the animal is wild or the owner is unknown and the animal needs to be captured, call central dispatch at 231-922-4550.
